Viagra Helps Treat Muscular Dystrophy
Viagra (sildenafil) is a popular drug for treating erectile dysfunction (ED) and high blood pressure in the lungs. It was approved for distribution in 1996 and annual sales exceed $1 billion. Pfizer, the maker of Viagra, has been looking for new applications to boost sales. Researchers from Stanford University found that Viagra increased exercise capacity at high altitude. Some people claim that Viagra is an effective female aphrodisiac.
Scientists are using the drug to reduce the load on the heart. A study by Dr. Jean-Claude Tardif and colleagues from Montreal Heart Institute Research Center in Canada found that Viagra was useful for preventing ED and heart failure in mice with muscular dystrophy. Viagra works by stimulating blood flow, which reduces the load on the heart in people with muscular dystrophy. Researchers must conduct extensive clinical studies to affirm these results in humans
New Moms Are Horny
What do you think the average new mom thinks about after giving birth to her first child? Sex! A survey of 10,000 women entitled "Sex and the American Mom" conducted by Cookie magazine showed that before kids, most women dream of having a cozy little family with little babies romping in the living room. After kids, their mind turns to the bedroom. An incredible 34 percent of new moms admitted to having an affair after giving birth and 53 percent thought about it.
Their leading celebrity fantasy affairs include George Clooney, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and Barack Obama. They liked Obama because they perceived him as a good father and family man. Half of new moms thought their husbands were also having affairs. Nearly 80 percent of new moms said they wanted more sex and 29 percent said they'd rather get more action than lose 10 pounds. About 25 percent said that porn helps satisfy their sexual needs and 21 percent used alcohol to take the edge off their burning sex drives. The take-home message is that MILFs are fertile ground for young players, particularly guys who project the image of good family men. (New York Post, May 2, 2008)
Caffeine Might Help You Get It Up
Most men have trouble with erectile dysfunction (ED) some time in their lives. The risk of ED is much greater in men with diabetes or coronary artery disease and is linked to cell inflammation. Enzymes called phosphodiesterases (PDE) promote cell inflammation, suppress cyclic GMP (important for tissue blood flow) and trigger erection problems in diabetics. Physicians sometimes use PDE inhibitors such as Viagra to treat ED in diabetics.
Caffeine also inhibits PDE and might serve as a poor man's Viagra or help you get it up when the blue pills are in short supply. Chinese researchers found that administering caffeine to diabetic rats inhibited PDE, increased cyclic GMP and improved erection quality It is not known whether caffeine can promote erections in human diabetics or metabolically normal men. Give it a try and see if it works for you. (Journal Andrology, in press; published online April 17, 2008)
New Hope for Premature Elaculators
Premature ejaculation (PE) is the most significant sexual problem in men. It is most prevalent in men aged 18 to 40. Factors increasing the risk of PE include past history of sexually transmitted diseases or urinary tract infections, poor health, emotional stress, loss of income, past history of same sex activity, history of sexual harassment and childhood abuse. Factors clecreasinc the risk include daily alcohol consumption, circumcision and greater sexual experience. Men with strict religious backgrounds who view see as a sin or lack attraction for their partner also have an increased risk of PE. According to researchers from the New Jersey medical schoo in Newark, help may be on the way.
Physicians have successfully treated PE with antidepressant medicines such as Prozac. Unfortunately, these drugs can also cause impotence in some men and increase the risk of suicide. Administering Viagra with the antidepressant Paxil not only improves erections, but prevented premature ejaculation. Viagra works by increasing the secretion of a chemical called nitric oxide, which increases blood flow to the penis. High levels of nitric oxide interfere with ejaculation, which prolongs the sex act. Also, the Viagra produces a firmer erection, which gives men more confidence and control. The pain-relieving drugTramadol also shows promise in treating PE. (Journal Sexual Medicine, 5: 10371050, 2008)
High Triglycerides, Linked To Erectile Dysfunction
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is an important warning sign of serious diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke and high blood pressure. ED is linked to other important heart disease risk factors such as total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol. Israeli scientists found that high blood triglyceride levels (i.e., blood fats) also increase the risk of ED. Men with triglyceride levels above 500 milligrams per 10C milliliters of blood increased their risk of ED by 100 percent.
Cells lining the arteries in the penis called endothelial cells release a chemical called nitric oxide (NO), which controls blood flow and erections. Lack of exercise, obesity, problems with insulin metabolism and smoking can interfere with normal NO metabolism and lead to erection problems. Regular exercise and weight control help assure lifelong sexual health. Drugs such as Viagra can also improve short-term and long-term blood flow to the penis. Erectile Dysfunction Is A Warning Sign For Serious Health Problems
Erectile dysfunction (ED) affects as many as 50 percent of men over 40 years of age. ED is frustrating and depressing, but it is only the tip of the iceberg for serious health problems. A study of nearly 30,000 men by researchers from the Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York found that ED was an important predictor of serious health problems such as diabetes, heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, abnormal blood fats and angina (chest pain).
They developed a health risk calculator that considered health status, waist size, the severity of the ED and having or not having a sexual partner. The calculator could predict serious disease 86 percent of the time. Men with ED increased the risk of high blood pressure by 47 percent, cardiovascular disease and stroke by 30 percent and peripheral blood vessel disease by 85 percent. Diabetes increased the risk of ED by 176 percent. The risk increased by 321 percent if the men also had high blood pressure and abnormal blood fats. ED is an important indi, ator of cardiovascular and metabolic disease. See your doctor if you have problems getting an erection; you might also have other serious health issues. Viagra 101
We've heard jokes about the erection-promoting drug Viagra (sildenafil) for more than 10 years. The drug is effective in most men and even improves sexual staying power in young men without erection problems. Viagra might also have applications in weight training and other sports. Stanford University researchers found that the drug improves exercise capacity and reduces blood pressure in the lungs at altitude. Many weight trainers take Viagra before training to increase muscle blood flow and maximize muscle hypertrophy.
Brazilian researchers, in a study on rats, showed that Viagra stimulated the sympathetic nervous system–the part of the brain involved in the fight-or-flight response to stress and exercise. Heart rate and sympathetic nerve activity increased in the animals after the drug was injected into their brains. Viagra is involved in general arousal that accompanies sexual activity and does more than simply increasing the firmness of erections. (Journal Applied Physiology, 104:1683- 1689, 2008)
Women Like To Watch
Naked women turn on most men, but the reverse is not true for women. A University of Toronto study showed that when viewing sexually explicit films, women were turned on more by sexual activities performed by the actors rather than nudity. Conversely, men were turned on by the gender of the actors. The scientists measured sexual arousal in homosexual and heterosexual men and women watching erotic movies using infrared detectors that measured changes in groin temperature. Women were turned on by sexual activity between men and women, women and women, men and men and between chimpanzees.
Men were turned on most by nudity— heterosexuals to nude women and homosexuals to nude men. Men were not turned on by chimpanzee sex. Homosexual women were turned on most by women having sex and masturbating, while heterosexual women were turned on by any kind of sex. What does this mean to men in the trenches who are on the make? It could mean that women are kinkier than men, or it could mean absolutely nothing. (Journal Personality Social Psychology, 93:1108- 1121, 2007)
