tomI would like to talk about my bold statement in saying they aren’t held up to the same standards as the rest of the league.

Point #1

Rodney Harrison, tested positive for steroids, more accurately defined as HGH. He was suspended like 4 games, while Ricky Williams, Shaw Merriman, Odell Thurman, and a host of others have been given much larger suspensions. Some may have used illegal drugs like Marijuana and such but at the same time which drug is going to enhance your football ability?

Point #2

Second thing to address is the camera incident where they are taping the other teams signals and play calling. For the average fan watching it seems like no big deal if you are good you can run the play. Well. let me tell you coming from a NAIA football background you can not beat a team that knows exactly what play you are running. I would put my National Championship NAIA team against any Div 1 team as long as you tell us what play they are going to run.

If a team runs a cover 2 and you know it, all you have to do is run to the open spot on the field. If I know a team is running to the left off tackle trust me any team can stop you. Hence, why players spend hours upon hours watching film looking for ticks and signs of what play is coming. Also, this taping was bad enough for the NFL to make them turn the tapes in.

The tapes were also bad enough that instead of talking about it to the media, the NFL destroyed the tapes and said they would lose a pick and get fined a small amount. If say, the Falcons or the Dolphins or some team not high on the totem would have done this I predict there would have been much more severe consequences.

Point #3

The biggest thing that makes me angry is Randy Moss has a restraining order against him that had been upheld by a judge, and instead of the media blowing it up like they do anything else they instead talk about Brady’s ankle.

I fault the media for not taking control and making Moss look like the monster he is. If the judge doesn’t uphold the restraining order, I would let Moss off the hook. Instead he opts to not show up to court so in my mind the media should be on this, because now our kids see this guy and look up to him. All athletes involved in domestic violence need to be punished. This stuff should not be tolerated by fans or anyone.

Give Credit Where Credit Is Due

These are three examples of which the NFL mandates are not held up to the standards when talking New England Patriots. While I acknowledge these things to be true I also understand that New England has a great team. I don’t think the people in there personnel department get enough credit. Tom Brady is good but he has been surrounded by great players.

Put him on the Falcons, Chiefs or any other team and people would think different about him. In his career he has had Troy Brown, Terry Glenn, Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Deion Branch, and the list goes on of all the good receivers. He also has had a great running back behind him i.e. Dillon, Maroney, Faulk. Also the main thing is they have always had a healthy and well skilled offensive line.

The main part of their success if the defense, and although I can't name all the great players who have played there in the few years of success they have had, you do have to admit, their defense is great, other than the Super Bowl, where they stunk it up.

Now to talk about this season in which everyone gives them hype. Well, the NFL is on a down year, having come into the season the Patriots had 6 free division wins, because they are in the weakest division in football, as well as playing teams like the Ravens, who have no offense. They did play a few games that were difficult, but on the whole the NFL was down and they had an easy schedule. Also they had some luck which you need in order to go undefeated.

I'm not taking anything away from them, just trying to show they aren’t as great as everyone makes them out to be. They have been in close games throughout the end of the year. While teams like the '85 Bears may have lost a game but at the end of the year they blew teams out en-route to winning the Super Bowl by like thirty points.

In Conclusion

In closing, the Patriots are a great team with great players. I believe they would be a top tier team regardless of the scandals they are involved in and lets be honest, every team is probably doing something against the rules, which is sad but the NFL is about money and a dynasty generates revenue. I wish football could be pure and whole but it will never be as long as teams and players aren’t held responsible for what they do. The straight forward answer from me is the cheating has helped the Patriots win and I guarantee without the gifts the league has given them they would not be undefeated.
